A French marine seascape
in oil on panel

An unattributed French-school marine seascape in oil on panel, c.1850–1870 — a shore at low tide, fishing vessels drawn up on the sand, figures at work on the beach, and distant sailboats under a luminous, overcast sky. The palette is muted throughout: greys, ochres and a silvery, coastal light typical of the period's marine painting tradition.

The panel sits in its original 19th-century French giltwood frame — carved with acanthus, bead-and-reel and a laurel edge, hung from its period rope hanger. The gilt wear is honest and age-appropriate, not a fault to be corrected. The signature, lower-right in cursive, is unreadable; we catalogue the work as French school and present it unattributed rather than guess at a name.

Acquired from a French private collection via a regional estate sale, the panel is stable with only minor age craquelure — condition we'd call museum-ready. Photography for this piece is in progress; enquire directly for further images in the meantime.

For collectors searching for an antique marine painting, a 19th-century French seascape, or an oil-on-panel coastal scene in its original frame, this piece offers genuine period age and quality of light, at a compact scale that suits a gallery wall or a smaller room. Available for private sale from our gallery in Poznań, with worldwide shipping arranged on request.

Light, water & frame

Coastal Light

The overcast sky and low tide are handled in a muted, silvery register — grey, ochre and soft white — the quality of light rather than the naming of a place or artist being the real subject of the panel.

Original Giltwood Frame

The frame is period and original to the piece: carved acanthus leaves, a bead-and-reel moulding and a laurel edge, hung from its original rope hanger. Gilt wear is honest and consistent with age, left as found.

Unattributed, Honestly

The lower-right signature is present but not legible. Rather than propose a name we cannot confirm, we catalogue this as French school, c.1850–1870 — the quality of the painting stands on its own.

This piece forms part of our collection of European and Asian antiques available at Stitt Gallery, Poznań.
