A giltwood wall mirror
with mercury glass

A giltwood wall mirror in the French 19th-century manner, its rectangular frame worked in gilt gesso and retaining a warm, softly foxed mercury plate. The clouding in the glass is the signature of age — evidence of an original mercury-silvered plate rather than a modern replacement — and is prized as such.

At 78 × 60 cm it is an eminently hangable "console mirror" scale: designed, as these were in the Haussmann apartment, to sit above a console and double the light of a room. Portrait orientation and a restrained frame profile make it easy to place, whether over a mantel, in an entrance, or as the anchor of a wall grouping.

Acquired on a June 2026 buying trip to France, the frame is catalogued by style and period — Louis-Philippe or Napoléon III, or in that style — pending further research.

For anyone searching for an antique gold mirror, a French giltwood wall mirror, or a genuine mercury-glass mirror for sale, this piece combines real period age with a scale that suits a hallway, mantel or console anywhere from a Poznań apartment to a period townhouse. Available for private sale, with worldwide shipping arranged on request.

Glass, frame & scale

Mercury Glass

The plate retains a warm, softly foxed mercury surface — the clouding that comes only with age, and evidence of an original mercury-silvered plate rather than a modern replacement. This ageing is prized, not a flaw, in mirrors of this type.

Giltwood Frame

The rectangular frame is worked in gilt gesso over wood, in the restrained profile of the French 19th-century manner — Louis-Philippe or Napoléon III, or in that style. Portrait orientation throughout.

Console Mirror Scale

At 78 × 60 cm, the mirror is an eminently hangable console-mirror scale — designed to sit above a console and double the light of a room, as in the Haussmann apartment. Easy to place over a mantel, in an entrance, or within a wall grouping.

This piece forms part of our collection of European and Asian antiques available at Stitt Gallery, Poznań.
