The Pair
An exceptional pair of monumental Chinese lacquer panels, each 160cm high — a rare example of an object carrying full, century-old historical documentation, discovered on the borderlands of China and Tibet.
The panels are worked in gilt lacquer in the Chinese court-art tradition. The iconography depicts the meeting of King Wen with the sage Jiang Ziya — a classic subject of Chinese courtly art, rendered in raised, gilded relief against the dark lacquer ground.
Inscriptions on the reverse confirm provenance from the Lazarist monastery and an unbroken ownership history from 1920 — the Carrère, Baudais and Alquier families. Objects of this transparent history and scale are highly sought after by the major auction houses of Paris and London, where they achieve prices in the order of thousands of euros.
