Belle Époque
Wall Sconces

A monumental pair of Belle Époque sconces

A monumental pair of two-arm wall sconces from the French Belle Époque, circa 1890–1910 — an absolute rarity of the market at this scale. Each sconce stands 72cm high and unites the power of chiselled bronze with the delicacy of Jasperware biscuit.

The bronze is of the highest order — heavily cast and finely chiselled, each sconce weighing 5kg (10kg for the pair) and carrying a noble aged patina. The form rises to a ribbon-tied crest above scrolling foliate arms.

The focal point of each is a matte Jasperware-type biscuit medallion in the Wedgwood manner, depicting mythological figures — among them the god Apollo with his lyre, a symbol of harmony and the arts. Condition is very good; the porcelain medallions are without losses.

Bronze & biscuit

Chiselled Bronze

Each sconce is heavily cast and hand-chiselled, weighing 5kg. The crisp ciselure of the foliate scrolls, ribbon crest and candle nozzles is the mark of quality Belle Époque bronze work, carrying an authentic aged patina.

Jasperware Medallions

The central medallions are matte biscuit porcelain in the Jasperware manner made famous by Wedgwood — pale relief figures against a coloured ground. The mythological subjects, including Apollo with his lyre, are rendered with fine detail.

Two-Arm Form

Each sconce carries twin scrolling candle arms — a true two-light wall sconce. Originally candle-lit; can be discreetly electrified for modern use on request.

A Matched Pair

The two sconces are presented as an inseparable pair. Flanking a mirror, fireplace or doorway, they read as a single architectural gesture of palatial scale.

This piece forms part of our collection of European and Asian antiques available at Stitt Gallery, Poznań.

€1,450 for the pair
